Quantifying focal mechanism heterogeneity for fault zones in central and southern California

چکیده
S U M M A R Y We present a statistical analysis of focal mechanism orientations for nine California fault zones with the goal of quantifying variations of fault zone heterogeneity at seismogenic depths. The focal mechanism data are generated from first motion polarities for earthquakes in the time period 1983–2004, magnitude range 0–5, and depth range 0–15 km. Only mechanisms with good quality solutions are used. We define fault zones using 20 km wide rectangles and use summations of normalized potency tensors to describe the distribution of doublecouple orientations for each fault zone. Focal mechanism heterogeneity is quantified using two measures computed from the tensors that relate to the scatter in orientations and rotational asymmetry or skewness of the distribution. We illustrate the use of these quantities by showing relative differences in the focal mechanism heterogeneity characteristics for different fault zones. These differences are shown to relate to properties of the fault zone surface traces such that increased scatter correlates with fault trace complexity and rotational asymmetry correlates with the dominant fault trace azimuth. These correlations indicate a link between the long-term evolution of a fault zone over many earthquake cycles and its seismic behaviour over a 20 yr time period. Analysis of the partitioning of San Jacinto fault zone focal mechanisms into different faulting styles further indicates that heterogeneity is dominantly controlled by structural properties of the fault zone, rather than time or magnitude related properties of the seismicity.

Patterns of co-seismic strain computed from southern California focal mechanisms
S U M M A R Y Geometrical properties of an earthquake population can be described by summation of seismic potency tensors that provide a strain-based description of earthquake focal mechanisms. We apply this method to∼170 000 potency tensors for 0<ML ≤ 5 southern California earthquakes recorded between January 1984 and June 2003. We compare summed tensors for populations defined by faulting reg...
متن کاملActivity of the Offshore Newport–Inglewood Rose Canyon Fault Zone, Coastal Southern California, from Relocated Microseismicity
An offshore zone of faulting approximately 10 km from the southern California coast connects the seismically active strike-slip Newport–Inglewood fault zone in the Los Angeles metropolitan region with the active Rose Canyon fault zone in the San Diego area. Relatively little seismicity has been recorded along the offshore Newport–Inglewood Rose Canyon fault zone, although it has long been suspe...
متن کاملCrustal stress field in southern California and its implications for fault mechanics
We present a new, high spatial resolution image of stress orientation in southern California based on the inversion of earthquake focal mechanisms. We use this image to study the mechanics of faulting in the plate boundary region. The stress field contains significant spatial heterogeneity, which in some cases appears to be a result of the complexity of faulting and in other cases appears to be...
متن کاملKinematics of the Dena Fault and Its Relation to Deep-Seated Transverse Faults in Zagros Fold-Thrust Belt, Iran
The NNW-trending Dena Fault, with 140 km length, cuts the major structures of Zagros Fold-Thrust Belt in Borujen region. The fault has divided the region in two zones, in which different structural, andmorphological features as well assedimentation and seismtectonic characteristics have developed. This study presents a new interpretation for the kinematics of Dena Fault based on field evidence....
متن کاملMoment tensor and stress inversion for an active fault system in west part of Lut-Block, Iran
Iran is one of the most tectonically active regions on the Alpine-Himalayan earthquake belt. Eastern Iran, nowadays, is one of the most active regions of the country. The occurrence of several destructive earthquakes during the past 50 years provides the evidence for the seismic activity in this region. The earthquakes are mostly concentrated around the Lut-block. There are strike-slip fault sy...
